Eco-Schools

At Packmoor Ormiston Academy we are passionate about Eco-Schools. We currently hold several Green Flag Awards (an international accreditation) which shows our commitment to the environment and all things Eco.

Eco-Schools is a huge part of pupil voice at the school and is run by pupils from throughout the school. Pupils are responsible for assessing the schools progress and deciding on activities and projects that we will cover each year. Pupils are in charge of carrying out chosen topics with support from enthusiastic members of staff across the school.

Eco-Schools gives pupils a chance to make a real difference to the world and to their own futures. Protecting our planet starts with our pupils and at Packmoor Ormiston Academy we are committed to helping them on this journey.

There are lots of benefits to pupils, Eco-Schools UK says it:

  • Engages young people in important environmental issues.
  • Demonstrates to pupils that environmental actions can be enjoyable, social and rewarding.
  • Teaches responsibility and generates a sense of community.
  • Develops the skills and knowledge young people need to play an active role in protecting our environment now and throughout their lifetimes.
  • Empowers students with the belief that they can have a positive impact on our planet.
  • Enables schools to green their entire curriculum.

Independent research has also found that pupil participation in Eco-Schools leads to: increased confidence, development of leadership skills, improved behaviour and greater motivation at school.

Forest Schools

At Packmoor Ormiston Academy we believe that pupils should have access to the outdoors and nature. Pupils have access to regular Forest School and outdoor learning opportunities, throughout their time at our school.

Forest School is an inspirational process that offers children and young people opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self-esteem, through hands-on learning experiences in a local woodland environment.” Forest School (England) Network.

Forest School is a Scandinavian idea that aims to make the outdoors and nature part of everyday life.

At Packmoor Ormiston Academy we provide Forest School so that children get the opportunity to use tools, light campfires, do crafts and den building (plus lots more fun activities). Sessions are run by fully qualified staff who are extremely experienced in delivering outdoor education to pupils.

Forest School lets children learn how to handle risk safely, provides great support for mental health and well-being as well as problem solving and team building opportunities.

Sessions are run in our own forest area on the school grounds. Activities are all child-led with lots of imagination and a huge amount of fun.
