Home Reading

As part of our home learning policy, we expect the children to read as frequently as they can at home, with a minimum of 4 reads a week being recorded in their reading diary. As is the case within the classroom, reading plays a vital role in all curriculum areas, and is practised and consolidated throughout everything that we do. We ask the children to continue to read outside of the classroom to ensure that they are practising the key skills learnt at school. Whilst at home the children will either have access to a phonics book that they have been directed to read as part of their Phonics’ learning, or an age-appropriate book linked to their current ZPD. Children in Reception and Nursery can access picture books as part of their reading journey, where they can make up stories with an adult or discuss the pictures that they see.

Below is a rough guide to the reading requirement at home. Your child is expected to return their reading diary to school each Friday, where the class teacher will monitor the number of times your child has read during the week. These reads count towards our yearly reading challenge.
