Geography Vision Statement

Geography at Packmoor Ormiston Academy will inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We will learn to draw and interpret maps and to develop a variety of other skills through our curriculum work, including those of enquiry, problem-solving, investigating and presenting our work, calling on skills learned in maths and English and applying them in new ways.

We aim to instil in children a sense of environmental responsibility and encourage them to understand environmental issues at a local and global level. At Packmoor Ormiston Academy, we have an Eco-Councillor in each class, who are beginning to look at important areas such as our energy efficiency and reducing litter around our academy.

Running through all of our geography learning at Packmoor Ormiston Academy is the idea that we are motivating and inspiring our children to find out about their world, both physical and human, so that they can take an active part in contributing to and protecting this world as they grow up

SMSC in Geography

  • Spiritually – Geography supports spiritual development by promoting a sense of wonder and fascination with the physical and human world.
  • Morally – By considering environmental relationships. For example, should the rainforest be exploited? Discussion, debate and role-play enable pupils to explore such issues.
  • Socially – By considering social responsibility e.g. care for the environment through our Eco School Status.
  • Culturally –Through geography children look at how different cultures and beliefs can impact on the environment.
